There have been more than 165,000 Fiat 500s sold in North America since 2011. As the cars age, it is inevitable that things like light bulbs eventually burn out. One item that caused owners of early Fiat 500 models some annoyance was replacing the license plate LED bulb located in the tailgate lift handle.Early cars required you to change the entire tailgate lift handle at considerable expense - normally well over $100. However, starting somewhere around March 2012, Fiat revised the license plate LED to make it replaceable, with a cost of around $20. Below is how to change the license plate LED bulb in late model Fiat 500, 500 Cabrio and 500 Abarth models.

The process can be broken down into a few simple steps - each of which I will expand on. Notice the bulb is out and obtain correct replacement (see manual). Remove assembly. Replace bulb. Put it back togetherStep 1 - Notice the bulb is out and obtain correct replacement (see manual)Personally I recommend checking the manual as it has a simple table for determining the correct replacement bulb type.

For the number plate bulb you need a W5W replacement - also known as 501. These are the same as the sidelight bulbs (Philips BlueVision are my personal choice).Step 2 - Remove assemblyLook above the number plate and you will see the assembly with a clip at one end. You need to use your finger (or a small flat headed screwdriver - careful with the paint!) to push the clip inwards. The other end of the holder slots into place so swing it down from the clip end and out. The wire with the bulb attached can be pulled out about 10cm so there is plenty of room.Step 3 - Replace bulbTo remove the bulb turn the holder 90 degrees to remove it from the rest of the assembly. Now simply pull the bulb out and push in the replacement.

Check the packaging as some bulbs are best held in a cloth rather than having your fingers touch them.Step 4 - Put it all back togetherThis is just the reverse of what you have already done. Make sure you don't trap the wire when refitting the assembly to the bumper. Hi,Thank you so much for this post (7 years old?!) Process was magic. Love my results too!I used Ebay canbus free LED's, one however does still have an error. Cost £4 so what do you expect.

Also less than 24 hours from payment/arrival!!Hi Matt, do you have a link to the exact LED's you used in your mod?I have the same car (my first car too) and I am currently in the process of overhauling the lights - starting with the number platesMy knowledge is limited as I am a car newbie.Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance!Hello,Yep got them here and got the resistors hereI would recommend the resistors as only one of my LED's decided to show up an error so I wanted rid of the pesky dash warning and they arent too expensive either. Super easy to install the lot. Followed your instructions, bought myself some new bulbs from Amazon but then found my daughters ‘59 plate 500C to be somewhat different. Only the clear light cover comes off (eventually and carefully) and the bulb housing stays put. Then I found the bulbs to be C5W’s not W5W’s.

My own fault for not checking I guess. Still, only cost a couple of quid and I’m hoping I can keep the W5W’s as spare side light bulbs(?)Other than that I’m new to the forum having just bought my daughter the above mention car, so “hi all”.Edit.

just realised this post was for a Punto! That’ll teach me to read the heading and not just follow a web search blindly.
